TRUE TOW MIDDLEWEIGHT INSTRUCTION MANUAL

You should use a weight distribution hitch whenever your trailer's tongue weight or total loaded trailer weight approaches the towing limits of your vehicle or receiver. Many vehicle manufacturers recommend using one for heavier trailers, often around 5,000 pounds of gross trailer weight, but you should always follow your vehicle owner's manual and hitch receiver ratings. A weight distribution hitch can improve towing stability, handling, and braking even before you reach the maximum towing capacity.

No. The True Tow Middleweight Weight Distribution Hitch is designed with self-lubricating components that eliminate the need for grease on the spring arms or hitch head during normal operation. This helps reduce mess and simplifies maintenance. We still recommend regularly inspecting the hitch for wear and following the maintenance guidelines in the owner's manual.

The True Tow Middleweight Weight Distribution Hitch is designed for many small to medium-sized trailers, including travel trailers, toy haulers, enclosed cargo trailers, and utility trailers. It is available with spring arm ratings for trailers up to 8,500 lbs or 12,500 lbs gross trailer weight, making it suitable for a wide range of towing setups. The hitch fits trailers with an A-frame up to 2.5" x 6" and a maximum trailer frame height of 6 inches (or larger with the optional 8-inch accessory bracket). Before purchasing, verify that your trailer uses a 2-5/16-inch coupler (it is not compatible with 2-inch couplers) and review the coupler dimension guide to ensure proper clearance.

Add it to your Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR); our calculations take the weight of the hitch into account and distributes it.

While not recommended, you can back up with your hitch attached as long as you’re not backing up a steep driveway or anything that is a significant change in grade.

Yes, you can. The purpose of the weight distribution hitch is to return any weight that is lost off the front axle of the tow vehicle when the trailer is attached. It is not meant to take away all the squat in the truck. The tongue weight of the trailer still exists and is added to the back axle causing compression on the springs. If you would like to reduce that remaining squat in the back of your tow vehicle, feel free to use airbags or any other anti-squat system. Just make sure you check that your DTW (Distributed Tongue Weight) is correct for every tow with or without airbags.

Some amount of rear-end squat is completely normal, even when your weight distribution hitch is properly adjusted. A weight distribution hitch is designed to restore weight to the front axle of the tow vehicle for improved steering and control, not eliminate all suspension compression at the rear.

If your truck seems to be squatting more than expected:

  • Verify that your tow vehicle and hitch are not exceeding their weight ratings.
  • Double-check that you entered the correct measurements and tongue weight into the Distributed Tongue Weight (DTW) Tool.
  • Confirm that your hitch has been adjusted to the recommended DTW setting. In most cases, the distributed tongue weight should be approximately 2 to 3 times the original tongue weight.

If everything has been set up correctly and excessive squat remains, contact our Customer Support team so we can help troubleshoot your setup. If you'd like to reduce the remaining squat for ride comfort, you may also use airbags or another rear suspension support system. Just be sure to verify your DTW setting whenever you tow, whether or not those systems are installed.

True Tow Middleweight Weight Distribution Hitch Manual

Yes, the largest A-Frame that our weight distribution hitch can fit on is a 2.5″x6″ frame, so as long as it is that size or smaller, it should work!

If you feel that your truck is still squatting more than normal even after you have adjusted the True Tow hitch to read the DTW that you determined from the DTW tool, double check the following:

  1. Check your tow vehicle ratings and make sure you are not towing over the weight capacity.
  2. Check that all measurements and the tongue weight without the spring arms attached were inputted correctly into the DTW tool to ensure you have the correct DTW.

The DTW should be about 2-3 times more than the original tongue weight of the trailer. If this is not so, something must be wrong. Please contact our Customer Support team so we can look further into resolving this for you.

LIVE ADJUSTMENT SYSTEM

A live adjustment system built into the head assembly with an internal pivot point for quicker and easier installation. With the ability for anytime adjustment, this feature will save you a significant amount of time.

EASY HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT

Easy height adjustment with 1.25” hole increments for more accurate height adjustment which means no more torquing bolts!

DTW TOOL

DTW (Distributed Tongue Weight) tool application for smartphones (android and IOS) or available on our website to set up the highly accurate distributed system. This tool outputs a DTW that the Weigh Safe gauge on the hitch will read when distributed correctly.

TRUE DISTRIBUTION

Truly distributes the tongue weight of the trailer between the back axle of the tow vehicle, and the axle(s) of the trailer and returns the lost weight off the front axle. This provides a safer and smoother ride.

ANTI-SWAY HITCH

Provides anti-sway friction areas that help reduce sway caused by wind or passing vehicles. These areas reside in the sway bar connection points in the head assembly and the trailer bracket connection points. The hitch head assembly, spring arms and trailer brackets are all vital components to aid in reducing trailer sway.

The True Tow™ Weight Distribution Hitch – Middleweight can be easily interchanged between different tow vehicles and trailers so you can put trailer brackets on as many trailers as you want!
